What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient method of medicine and healing practised for thousands of years.  Its wisdom recognises the interconnectedness of the body - particularly the organs -  and its influence on health and healing.

During its vast history it has undergone many changes and different schools vary in their practical application.  However, they all agree on a fundamental theory: any illness is a stagnation or blackage of ‘Qi’ / ‘energy’ or deficiency of blood and qi.

The goal of acupuncture is to therefore identify the weakness and stagnation in the body and heal it.

Japanese Acupuncture - Toyohari

One of the most influential schools of acupuncture is known as Toyohari - developed in Japan. The mavericks of this school tested and proved new approaches to acupuncture which led to the creation of this unique method - one that was once even practised by blind acupuncturists.

Toyohari is unique as it does not require the insertion of needles to stimulate the meridians and restore balance and healing in the body. It uses specialised needle techniques which are very gentle and non-invasive.

Since the treatment is pain free and less invasive than other forms of acupuncture it is particularly suited to children (Shonishin) and for those who are scared of needles.

Toyohari is an advanced school of acupuncture -
practitioners who study this approach in the UK must already be qualified as acupuncturists before undergoing further training to become a registered Toyohari practitioner.

Moxibustion or "Moxa"

Moxa involves burning the herb 'Mugwort' to create heat on acupuncture points and channels throughout the body. Classical Chinese medicine texts (Ling Shu and Guan Neng), state that moxa is as effective as acupuncture and specifically increases production of blood and "yin" energy.

The moxa’s thermal properties rebalance the nerve-endocrine-immune network and circulatory system, which helps to prevent and cure disease often by stimulating the production of Anti-inflamatory Cytokines and consequently WBC (White Blood Cells) count. It also raises blood calcium level, quality of platelets, volume of hemoglobin and number of red blood cells.

Moxa is a strong antioxidant and also has antiviral and antifungal properties. It is often used to address infertility and to remedy breech baby syndrome. Although in the west Moxa is less known, in Eastern cultures it is often even more popular than acupuncture.

Acupuncture in the UK - what the NHS says

The NHS recognises acupuncture as a complementary medicine.  Acupuncture is especially recognised for its unique ability to reduce chronic pain without drugs and side effects.

At present, the NHS recommends acupuncture as a treatment option for migraines and chronic headaches but it is often used for other chronic pain conditions - including muscle and joint pain and even dental pain.
